Founded in 2001, Conjunto is violinist James Sanders’ long running project to unite his classical training and Dominican heritage with the freedom of jazz improvisation, all grounded in Afro-Cuban rhythms: rumba, son, danzón and more.
In Conjunto, jazz freedom, intricate instrumental virtuosity and propulsive dance rhythms find equal footing in a cohesive whole, making music for mind, body, and soul. They have performed at the Chicago Jazz Festival, Andy’s Jazz Club, the Jazz Showcase, the Chicago Latin Jazz Festival, the Velvet Lounge, the Evanston Ethnic Arts Festival, Katerina’s, Chicago SummerDance and many more. In 2010, Conjunto headlined at Millennium Park’s Jay Pritzker Pavilion for the ‘Made in Chicago: World Class Jazz’ series before an audience of nearly 10,000 people.

Yuri Hevia is a Chilean drummer based in Chicago since 2006. His arrival to the United States was in 2002 when he was the invited drummer of the group Mamma Soul, who were nominated that year for the Latin Grammys.
Yuri came to Chicago from Los Angeles, where he was a session drummer. Once here, he began his studies of traditional and folkloric South American, North African and Middle Eastern music. He has played with the legendary New York flautist Dave Valentin, participated in a tour with the Latin Jazz All-Stars along with the legendary jazz musicians: Steve Turre, Nestor Torres and Chembo Corniel. He has also collaborated with the Cuban jazz master Orlando Sanchez, Cubajazz and the legendary Puerto Rican trombonist William Cepeda.

Amada, founded by Brazilian drummer and percussionist Luiz Ewerling, is a band that divines a unique blending of Brazilian and American musical styles, ranging from Brazilian Pop to Rock, from Samba to Swing, from the free flowing pulse of the Partido Alto to contemporary jazz.
In this Sabor a Cafe show, the band will present a collection of originals, as well as a selection of their favorite popular Brazilian and Latin pieces. “

Born in Havana, Cuba, multiple GRAMMY and Billboard nominated composer and performer Donato Poveda follows up his sold out 2017 show with a return to Sabor a Café.
He began his career as a troubadour at the age of 18 and was soon creating music for theater and television. He won the Best Music Award at the International Film Festival De La Habana in 1989 for the film "La Botija". It is released in Cuba with songs, "Madre Por Qué?", "Alex," "A Love Story," "Changing the Subject," "The Missing Link," and "Someone Calling."
He soon moved to the United States and began working as a songwriter and collaborator with some of the great voices of Latin music, among them Julio Iglesias, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Cristian Castro, Alejandro Fernandez, Willy Chirino, Jerry Rivera and Tania Libertad. His song "Por Ti Seré" was a huge success for singer Josh Groban in its English version, titled "You Raise Me Up."
He has released many albums under his own name and as part of the duo Donato and Estafano. His 2002 album "Bohemio Enamorado" reached Billboard's Top 20 and was nominated for a GRAMMY in the category "Best Latin Pop Album of the Year".

Gonzalo Cordova is one of Chicago's finest interpreters of the Latin American songbook, from trova and nueva canción to bossa, balladas and beyond. Born in Mexico City, Gonzalo's background is steeped in traditional and popular Latin music ranging from Nuevo Flamenco to Mexican Folk. He was a founding member of the Grammy nominated Sones de Mexico Ensemble.
Raúl Fernández is a percussionist who studies and performs a wide range of contemporary and traditional styles of music from all over Latin America and the Caribbean. He plays drums, percussion, and/or guitar with groups such as El Payo, Vicios de Papa, Son del Viento and Azul de Noche. He, too, was a founding member of Sones de Mexico Ensemble.
Together they'll embark on a musical journey through Latin American sounds and traditions.

Brazilian choro is a cousin of "samba." It is communal by nature and appeals to young and old. Classical and jazz players find common ground working in this style that allows for freedom of expression through improvisation, technical dexterity and rhythmic feel.

Sabor a Café welcomes one of Chicago's premier singers, composers and bandleaders, José 'Papo' Santiago.
Papo Santiago started his musical journey in Ponce, Puerto Rico, the birthplace of some of the most celebrated musicians in Latin music history. Santiago pursued a degree in music at Universidad Interamericana, San German, Puerto Rico.
Before completing his studies, he was recruited to play baritone sax with "La Terrifica" by its bandleader Joe Rodriguez. "La Terrifica" spun off from "La Sonora Poncena" in the early 70's and paved the way for Santiago's incursion into the world of salsa. The band's international acclaim took Santiago to the demanding salsa public of Venezuela, Colombia, Peru and New York among others. After forging his musical reputation, he became a sought after musician, sharing the stage with upper brass of Afro-Caribbean music, including "Fania All-Stars", "La Sonora Poncena", "Ismael Miranda", "Marvin Santiago", Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez, Carlos "Cano" Estremera, Henry Fiol. Lalo Rodriguez, Eddie Santiago, and Nino Segarra.
His sonero influences are Ismael Rivera. Luigi Texidor, Marvin Santiago, Isaac Delgado and "El Tiburón" Morales. In his improvisations, he combines street-wise sense of humor with a unique approach to rhythm and swing. Santiago stands as an icon of the harmonious fusion of classic influences with the most innovative trends in tropical music.

For the past twenty years with four albums as a leader, several studio projects as a side man, and countless worldwide performances, saxophonist, vocalist and composer Juli Wood has established herself as a solid, swinging, lyrical and entertaining performer on Chicago’s music scene.
Juli is in the tradition of saxophonists who were also great vocalists; Cleanhead Vincent, Eddie Harris, and Louis Jordan. Never has that been more apparent than in “5 4 3 2 1 Juli Wood,” her latest recording and most ambitious project to date.

José Cornier, born of Puerto Rican and French descent, is no stranger to the age-old adage that it takes a whole lot of faith to move mountains. The Humboldt Park native picked up his first guitar at the age of 8 and is now able to play any guitar placed in front of him.
José Cornier is a man with a vision: Sharing his love through music. José has played at many major events throughout the Chicago area, across the country and overseas. He attended the Latin Grammys and the Latin Billboard Awards in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 2010. José was honored as "Someone You Should Know" by Harry Porterfield of CBS 2 and in 2008 performed for Chef Rick Bayless, composing a song called "One Plate at a Time" for his induction to the Chef’s Hall of Fame here in Chicago. José has also performed at a fundraiser for President Barack Obama.
He has released 3 CDs, "Esperanza", "En Mi Camino" and most recently "Just For The Love" on Chi-Sound Records.
His sound combines acoustic Spanish guitar artistry with lively Latin jazz rhythms in an irresistibly dancable groove.

Sabor a Café presents a Rumba Jam Session featuring some of Chicago's finest Latin and jazz musicians led by Melvis Santa and Ashedí.

2018 Grammy nominee Melvis Santa and her group Ashedí bring the powerful, ecstatic Afro Cuban tradition to new spaces. Melvis leads on piano and vocals while fronting a full percussion set of batá drums featuring Master percussionists Roman Diaz, Rafael Monteagudo and Anier Alonso.
Born in Havana, Melvis Santa has been well known in Cuba since she was fourteen years old and formed the vocal group Sexto Sentido. In 2010 Melvis spread her wings and appeared as one of the lead vocalists of Interactivo, a seminal fusion band in Cuba, recording and touring worldwide.
Based in New York since 2014, she continues to make a mark as a performer and educator teaching Afro-Cuban music and dance workshops at NYU, CUNY Graduate Center, Tulane University of New Orleans, YALE University, and others. Melvis has also worked with a who’s who of the jazz and Latin communities, from Ravi Coltrane to the Buena Vista Social Club.
